Lecture Series, 2009-2010
Dr. Karen Emmorey and the San Diego University Research Foundation are pleased to announce the LLCN Lecture Series. The series features well-known speakers who work in disciplines of interest to signed language researchers and members of the Deaf community. The lectures are open to interested individuals; however please note that the lectures are given in American Sign Language, without interpretation.
The lectures take place three times per year and are held at the Laboratory for Language and Cognitive Neuroscience (6495 Alvarado Road, Suite 200). A reception and conversation with the speaker follow each lecture.

"Health Education for the Deaf Community: A Collaborative Approach"

In this presentation, Dr. Nakaji will describe five ongoing projects that are designed to advance the knowledge of Deaf individuals on various health topics, particularly in the area of cancer research. Dr. Nakaji will present information on the ongoing work with training medical students on Deaf culture, American Sign Language (ASL) and cancer prevention and with providing cancer education to members of the Deaf community in ASL. Additionally, she will describe a project for providing oncology training for signed language interpreters. She will also describe a program that offers assistive listening devices for Deaf and hard of hearing people. Finally, Dr. Nakaji will discuss a prototype website that includes "Healthy Humor Messages" that are signed in ASL and sandwiched with other health information. Dr. Nakaji will provide an overview of each the projects' goals and summarize the progress and results to date.
Melanie C. Nakaji holds a Ph.D. in Human Rehabilitation from the University of Northern Colorado. Since 2003 she has been the Project Coordinator for the Medical Student Deaf Culture, ASL, and Cancer Prevention Training Program at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Her most recent project involves developing an ASL glossary of oncology words and launching an on-line training program for signed language interpreters.
